Today proved to be a busy day for the members of the LFC. Crews were getting ready to take part in an Emergency Vehicle Operators' Course (EVOC) when we were dispatched to the area of Township Line & Meadowbrook Rd. for a vehicle accident. Shortly after the medics and ambulance arrived on location, the call was upgraded to a vehicle accident with entrapment. This brought in 34 for the Engine Companies and 56 (Manoa) for the Rescue. Crews from E34, TS34, and R56 worked together flawlessly to remove the 2 trapped victims. 2 patients were flown via PennStar to the Childrens' Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) while the other was transpoted by ground. After we cleared the accident, members returned to class. The LFC was dispatched to 4 more calls throughout the day and the ambulance kept busy as well.

| PROJECT NEO |
| Date: |
2/18/2008 |
On Saturday, 2/16/2008, at 6:23 p.m., the LFC, along with the Brookline and Bon Air Fire Companies, were dispatched to W. Wilmont Avenue for a possible kitchen fire. When fire crews arrived on location, they found the fire to be out and a light smoke condition throughout the first floor of the house. The fire started while the Shale family was cooking dinner on the stove. Bourbon Steak was the main course of the night. While adding some extra bourbon to the pan, a flash fire occurred, causing the range hood above to catch fire. Mr. Shale was quick to react. He evacuated his wife and children, called 9-1-1, and with a rush of adrenaline, ripped the burning range-hood from the cabinet and threw it outside. When the fire companies arrived, they checked for extension of fire and ventilated the Shale's home with smoke ejectors.
Llanerch Fire Company Chief John Roberts and Assistant Chief Chris Millay thought this would be a great opportunity to launch their new Neighborhood Educational Opportunity Project (Project NEO). Project NEO is a fire and life safety educational blitz of a neighborhood. Project NEO will be implemented by the Llanerch Fire Company following any significant emergency incident in their district. Members of the fire company will stop by the neighborhood affected within 1-2 days of the incident. They will go door-to-door with educational material and offer to test smoke detectors. Smoke detectors and batteries are installed free of charge to any neighbors that need them.
On Sunday, 2/17/2008, a letter was dropped off to the neighbors of W. Wilmont Avenue, stating the fire company would return the following night for Project NEO. On Monday night, fire trucks lit up the street, literature was handed out regarding cooking safety and the importance of working smoke detectors in the home. Seven smoke detectors were installed. The response of the neighbors was that of overwhelming gratitude. Mr. Shale was the most thankful of all. He had been in a fire in Philadelphia as a teenager and learned from the experience. He was quick to call 9-1-1, knowing it would drastically reduce the response time of the fire companies. From the time he called, it took less than 2 minutes for the first fire crews to arrive at his front door.
All fires start small. The quicker the fire company can get there, the better. More than 4,000 Americans die each year from fire. Approximately 20,000 people are injured. Firefighters feel that many of those people would be alive today if they only had the information they needed to avoid disaster. The members of the Llanerch Fire Company hope that Project NEO helps reduce those numbers. Hopefully Project Neo allows Mr. Shale's neighbors to learn from his experience.

| HAPPY NEW YEAR! |
| Date: |
1/1/2008 |
The Officers, Crew, and Board of the LFC wishes you and your family a happy, healthy, and fire safe 2008! We have been quite fortunate with mild temperatures so far this winter. The cold weather is right around the corner though. We all know that the winter cold can be dangerous. But turning up the heat to combat the chill can also be a fire risk if heating equipment is not properly used.
Heating equipment is the second-leading cause of home fires in the United States, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The latest NFPA research shows that heating equipment was involved in an estimated 62,000 reported home fires in 2005. These fires resulted in roughly 700 deaths and roughly 1,500 injuries and nearly half the fires occurred during the winter months. The majority of home heating fires involve chimneys. Most home heating fire deaths involve space heaters.
The LFC is urging all Haverford Township residents to help reduce the number of home heating fires in our community. Here are just a few simple ways you can decrease the risk of a heating fire in your home:
•Keep or maintain a three-foot (one-meter) space between all heating equipment and anything that can burn.
•Do not use your oven to heat your home.
•Inspect and maintain heating equipment regularly for safety.
•Portable space heaters should be turned off every time you leave the room and before going to bed.
•Have your chimney inspected each year and cleaned if needed.
•Test the batteries in your smoke detector.
•Invest in a CO detector.
Any resident of the Llanerch Fire District, in need of a smoke detector or battery replacement is asked to contact the station at 610-446-9870. Set up an appointment for your FREE smoke detector/battery replacement today (limit (3) per household).

| SANTA CLAUS' VISIT RE-RESCHEDULED! |
| Date: |
12/16/2007 |
Santa is a VERY busy guy this time of year. He wanted to make sure he gets enough rest before Christmas, so he asked if we could take him around the Llanerch neighborhoods on Saturday, rather than Sunday. Who are we to argue with Santa?! Santa Claus will be visiting the Llanerch neighborhoods on Saturday, December 22nd. We expect him to arrive around noon, right after he eats his lunch. He will be riding in the LFC apparatus throughout the district handing out candy canes for all the good little boys and girls. His elves and LFC members will be helping out as well. Keep an eye out for Santa when you hear the sirens. And you better be good for goodness sake!

| FIRE SAFETY IN HISTORY... |
| Date: |
11/28/2007 |
Today marks the 65th anniversary of the infamous Cocoanut Grove fire, in Boston, Massachusetts. The Cocoanut Grove was a popular night club in 1942, located in the heart of the city. It was a Saturday night, and there were an estimated 1,000 patrons inside the club when a fire broke out in the basement lounge area around 10 p.m.. The fire spread rapidly, killing 492 people and injuring 166. Because of this tragedy, it was determined that fire codes must be amended, updated, and enforced. This fire led to improvements in codes pertaining to exits, over-crowding, emergency lighting, use of combustible materials as decorations, automatic sprinklers, and the redefining of "places of public assembly". Unfortunately, this was a reactive response. And even though these updated codes were in place, history has repeated itself (Station Nightclub, RI, 2/20/2003, 100 dead). Insuring current codes are being followed, and taking a proactive approach to fire safety will hopefully prevent any such tragedies from occurring in the future. |

| CHANGE YOUR CLOCKS / CHANGE YOUR BATTERIES |
| Date: |
11/03/2007 |
Tonight marks Daylight Savings Time. Don't forget to turn your clocks back 1 hour before you go to bed tonight. Be sure to change the batteries in your smoke detectors as well. 65% of home fire deaths occur in homes that are either missing smoke detectors, or who have smoke detectors that have missing or dead batteries. While the minimum smoke detector placement is 1 per floor, we recommend 1 in every room and hallway, with the exception of the kitchen and bathrooms. Smoke alarms also have an expiration. If your smoke detector is 10 years old or older, it's time for a new one! The LFC offers a Smoke Detector/Battery Replacement Program. If you are a member of the Llanerch Community and need either a smoke detector or battery replacement, call the station and we'll schedule a time to come to your home...absolutely FREE! (610.446.9870) [limit 3 per household]. The Officers and Crew of the LFC want to do our part in making you and your family FIRE SAFE! Enjoy your extra hour of sleep.

Between responding to emergency calls, theres nothing like paiting tables on a nice summer day. To makes the picnic tables in the back parking lot look nicer,
a few of the members started to paint them red and white. We finished one table so far. Later this week, both tables will be finished looking nice with a fresh coat of paint! Pictured are Becky Barch, Alex Jacobs, and Lauren Peabody. (Photos & Story: Paige Halligan)
